Azul y Garanza, Naturaleza Salvaje ‘Clarete’ 2020

The white and red versions of this wine have been mainstays of our range for the past two years. We learnt more about them at an online tasting with Dani Sanchez, who makes the wines with Maria Barrena.
They took over abandoned vineyards, planted with Garnacha Tinta and Garnacha Blanca in the Bardenas Reales desert region of Navarra, Spain, in 1999. With friends, they cleaned up the old co-operative winery and put fresh juice in its gravity-fed concrete tanks. Now they tend 17 hectares of vines, and cultivate drought-resistant crops on a further three hectares, to prevent soil erosion and increased desertification. Thistles are particularly abundant – hence their appearance on the distinctive labels.
This new addition to the range is a 50-50 marriage of the two grape varieties, offering the density of red and the lightness of white; the colour of a light red or a full-bodied rosé, it is vibrantly fruity, with crunchy cranberry, plum and nectarine flavours.
