Churton, Petit Manseng 2017

‘The best sweet wine to come out of the Southern Hemisphere’ (Andrew Jefford).

This 50cl bottle is a concentrated masterpiece from the tiny plot of Petit Manseng grown on Churton’s estate. The 2017 is made by passerilage – leaving the grapes on the vine after until they begin to shrivel, intensifying their sugars and flavours, whilst reducing the amount of juice contained inside. A hint of botrytis (or ‘noble rot’) adds further complexity.

Expect succulent flavours of apricot, marmalade and rye bread. An unforgettable end to a meal.

Sam and Mandy Weaver planted their vines on an undulating ridge line between the Waihopai and Omaka valleys in in 1997. This was (and remains) the height of idiosyncracy in Marlborough, where most vines are planted on the fertile soils of the valley floor, allowing for full mechanisation. At Churton, everything is done by hand, on low cut canes.
