Hayes, Estate Mataro, 2019

Out of stock

620 bottles (one third-use barrel) made, from Hayes’ own organic estate, home to old Mataro (or ‘Monastrell’ or ‘Mourvèdre’) bush vines. They were planted in the 1940s, and dry farmed for most of their life, though some drip irrigation has recently been installed to help them survive the ongoing drought.

2019 was incredibly dry in Barossa Valley, Australia, and yields desperately low. But as they say, vines like to suffer – and what little these suffering vines produced has made a deep, soft and elegant wine, with supple tannins.

Violets, plums, black cherry, damsons. Supple tannins and a hint of meat and leather, which will develop with time in bottle – and this has serious cellar potential. Delicious now, or could age for 10 years and more in the cellar.
