Slobodne, Majer NV

Slobodne is a farm and winery an hour’s drive east of Bratislava, with a fractured history. The Jewish owners were sent to concentration camps in World War II, and only one family member made it out alive. They tried to resurrect the farm, but in 1948 lost ownership again when Communism came.
Descendants managed to prove ownership of the farm when Communism fell in 1989, and have spent the time since replenishing the ecosystem, replanting vines and creating what is now a 350 hectare mixed farm. ‘Slobodne’ means ‘freedom’.
An intriguing and complex blend of mature Cabernet Sauvignon, young Frankovka (Blaufränkisch) and Alibernet, we get fresh flavours of plum, damson and cherry, and mature hints of prune, wet leaves, and mushroom from this medium-bodied red.
