About Hayes, ‘Alice’s’ Barossa Valley Mataro 2021

Names after Brett and Kylie Hayes’s teenage daughter, who is (apparently) as complex and multi-layered as this wine. Alice’s Mataro may not be the most immediate in jumping out of the glass; but give it just a little time memorable emerges. There are fruity notes of plum and strawberry, herbal hints (is that pine, perhaps?), and a definite meaty, earthy, animal undertone. It’s inky dark in hue, but there’s a brightness to the flavour.

This freshness characterises many wines from Barossa’s 2021 vintage, the first for almost a decade where the drought-prone area saw rain before fruit set – and the vines enjoyed good levels of moisture in the soil.

This is a red suitable for drinking now, but with 5-10 years of life in the cellar ahead.
