About The Comparative Case of Vinden and Hayes

We’ve curated, and discounted, a case of six wines, so you can compare and contrast two Semillons from Angus Vinden in Australia’s Hunter Valley, and a Chardonnay and Shiraz apiece from him and Brett Hayes in the Barossa.

Semillon is Hunter Valley’s most famous export, and mature versions of the wine develop a geographically specific waxy texture and a rich and smoky aroma; Vinden’ 2019 Reserve Semillon is a textbook example.

You can compare two single vineyard Chardonnays from old vines – Vinden’s from the Somerset vineyard, is juicy, long and lean, with plenty of citrus fruit character; Brett’s, from the Primrose vineyard, planted in 1975 in Barossa, is a little riper, with stone fruit character and pronounced salinity (only 600 bottles made).

And two Shiraz, alike in dignity but very different in character. Angus says his is a Shiraz for people who like Pinot Noir. It’s lightly extracted with high acidity, and a savoury character with notes of black pepper and black olive. Brett’s, by contrast, is deep and full bodied, with concentrated dark berry fruit with hints of vanilla.
