About Hayes Family Wines, Grenache ‘Block 2’ 2021

Each year, Brett Hayes chooses the best barrel or two of each of his grape varieties, and bottles them as a special edition estate wine. This one is made from old bush vine Grenache, planted in the 1940s, and dry farmed for most of its life.

Brett, like many other growers in Barossa, is excited about the potential of the 2021 vintage. The severe drought of 2020 was followed by some rain in Spring the following year, which meant that the ground had higher moisture levels when the vines came into bud, which helped lend the 2021 wines a fresher and more generous feel. This wine is bright, with aromas of lifted red berries and blueberries; another eminently cellar-able red.

Hayes Family Wines are a small independent producer in Barossa Valley, Australia, a region home to some of the oldest vines in the world, many of which are still planted on their own rootstocks, something rarely seen in Europe post-Phylloxera. Hayes’ estate is one of few to be certified organic in the region.
