About Birth of a Naturalist

We’ve curated (and discounted) a six pack of key natural wine styles, to make the perfect accompaniment to the festive season.

Meinklang, Epic Frizzante 2022: A light Pétillant Naturel from a mixed biodynamic farm in Burgenland, Austria. This blend of Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling and Muscat is delicate and yeasty, and at a mere 10.5% makes a perfect fizz for tired bodies on Christmas Eve, or a joyful breakfast wine on Christmas Day.

Gardunha Sul, Castelão Rosé 2021: Dark rosés are an emerging genre in the natural wine scene. More light red in appearance, this has the clean freshness of a rosé. Winemaker André Duque Lourenćo feels that Portugal’s Beira Baixa region has the potential to make wines that are delicate but powerful – like this. A galvanising aperitif, which would work perfectly with a seafood starter. Watermelon, mint, umeboshi plum

Gardunha Sul, Curtimenta Vinho Branco 2022: Made from macerated Fernão Pires and Moscatel Graúdo grapes, this skin-contact white has enough body to stand up to turkey or nut roasts. Preserved lemon, blood orange, white peach

Gardunha Sul, Corricão Red 2021: Corricão, with its pale red colour, negligible tannin, bright red fruit character and meaty undertone, reminds us of Gamay, and will work perfectly with herby roasted veg or stuffing. Minimal sulphites makes for a slightly reductive character, and André recommends giving this one a little time to breathe. Wild strawberry, rosemary, black olive

Smallfry, Jellyfish Grenache 2022: Juicy, fresh and dangerously drinkable red from Smallfry’s ungrafted bush vines in Vine Vale, Barossa Valley. Makes for a reviving beverage on Boxing Day, or a joyful informal sipper to open in good company. Blackcurrant, blueberry, blackberry

Smallfry, Joven 2020: Winemaker Wayne Ahrens spent time teaching in Barcelona as a young man, and this wine was inspired by the juicy, young and tangy reds he drank back then. A blend of Spanish varietals – mainly Tempranillo, Monastrell and Garnacha/Grenache, this is a great tapas wine, and one to serve at cellar temperature with a grazing plate of cold cuts, olives, and manchego. Morello cherry, plum, meatiness
