About Castello di Tassarolo, Barbera ‘Titouan’ 2023
A consistent and elegant Barbera from a 13 hectare estate in Monferrato, Piemonte, Italy. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, and Massimilian Spinola eschews the use of heavy machinery, and farms the land using heavy horse instead.
Though heavy, horses are considerably lighter than tractors, and farming the land this way can prevent soil compaction, and increase aeration and microbial life in the soil.
Unfiltered and made without sulphites, this wine is a great advert for natural winemaking, showing that you can producer deft, supple and ageworthy reds using natural wine techniques.
Named after the first Comtois horse the Spinolas introduced to their vineyards, this has all the acidity morello cherry and strawberry fruit you’d hope to find in a Barbera, with a hint of almond. Pleasingly full and potent, it’s an elegant and vibrant red.
