About Dancing in the dark

As Christmas approaches, traditional wine merchants wheel out the Big Reds – Bordeaux, Barolo, Brunello, Amarone della Valpolicella….
But as we hurtle downwards to the darkest day of the year, we prefer light, juicy, joyful reds. Wines to revive the spirit, without sending you to sleep. And when we need a little levity, we pop the cap on a Smallfry Wine.
In Barossa Valley’s warm climate, most producers make full bodied, oak aged reds, but Wayne Ahrens and Suzi Hilder, the partnership behind Smallfry, harvest early to keep the wines lighter and fresher.

Stella Luna 2020/2021

A blend of ungrafted, old vine Shiraz, and Cinsault, a drought resistant variety, perfect for the dry heat of Barossa. Bright acidity and low tannin makes this a refreshing wine, suitable for sipping or a good match for spicy foods and lighter meats. Though lower in alcohol (12.5%), there’s body here, and gamey, meaty hints. Violets. raspberry, cherry, blackcurrant

Eclectik Violet 2022

A blend of old bush vine Grenache and  Cinsault, a variety more commonly seen in the Languedoc, and in France sometimes called ‘the Pinot Noir of the south’. This is enduringly fruity. Strawberry, raspberry, almond

Joven 2020

This particular wine is a homage to the year Wayne spent teaching English in Barcelona. He enjoyed the young and fruit-driven Spanish reds, so he blended the Spanish varietals in his vineyard (Tempranillo, Garnacha, Monastrell) to create this tangy red. With a meaty bass-note, it’s eminently food friendly, and Wayne recommends pairing it with paella. Morello cherry, plum

Starry Starry Night Cinsault 2022

Further explorations in Cinsault. The bright and tangy red fruit character shines through this light and juicy red. Raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate

Jellyfish Grenache 2022

Grenache ripens all-too-readily, and this is the most potent of the reds, at 14% abv. Not that’ you’d know it, as it feels incredibly juicy. With the slightest sparkle, this is a little bit of bottled joy. Blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry

Barossa Pimpernel Trousseau 2021

If you’re new to Trousseau, it’s a variety more often found in France, in the Jura, but this example offers great typicity. There’s tangy red fruit here and floral hints, underpinned by a mushroom-y earthiness, which is softened by a herbal quality. Medium bodied, with bright acidity and impressive persistence on the palate, it’s food friendly, or makes an invigorating sipper.Cranberry, sour cherry, hibiscus, lemon balm
