About Davenport, ‘Horsmonden’ Dry White, 2023

Consistently persuasive advert for English wine. Will Davenport planted the vines for this, his first wine, back in the early 90s, and there is mineral complexity here, beneath gorgeous aromatics – elderflower, linden blossom, greengage.

This is a blend of five grape varieties: Bacchus, Ortega, Faber, Siegerrebe and Huxelrebe. They are each fermented separately before being blended into the finished wine.

Will Davenport is one of very few organically-certified UK producers. The damp of the UK climate creates lots of fungal disease pressure, and it takes a lot of manual labour in the vineyard to keep the crop healthy.

But Will has a deep commitment to organic agriculture and part of a sustainable lifestyle, and is always looking for ways to increase the health of his soil and the biodiversity of his vineyards. He has replanted all the old hedgerows on his ‘Limney’ estate, and has three active nesting boxes for barn owls.

As a winemaker, Will uses the natural yeasts on the grape skins, eschews additives (including added sugar, a commonplace practice in the UK) and bottles his wines with a minimum of added sulphites. Will’s wins are pure expressions of the grape variety and of his vineyard.
