About Hayes Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir 2019
Hayes Family Wines grow grapes in Barossa Valley, Australia; home to warm climate, big reds like Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro; so it was a touch unfortunate when Brett Hayes’ partner Kylie became a Pinot Noir lover, as this variety prefers cooler conditions.
Luckily, Brett had a friend high in the neighbouring wine region of Adelaide Hills with old vine Pinot Noir, and so he could source enough grapes to make 1200 bottles.
Unluckily, the finished wine was a touch too rich for Kylie. But one person’s misfortune is another person’s joy, and we’re delighted to have brought (just) 24 bottles of this wine to the UK with our latest shipment.
Like most Hayes wines, there’s an enviable structure here, and a layer of fine tannin that makes this wine worthy of at least 5 years in the cellar. But why wait, as it’s drinking beautifully now?
A savoury nose of barrel spice and earthiness explodes with fruit on the palate – strawberry, raspberry and cherry coming through the layer of cinnamon, vanilla and toast. There’s a high altitude freshness to the wine, balanced by a mouth-filling richness.
