Terrace Edge is a small family winery in Waipara, an emerging wine region on New Zealand’s south island, where we volunteered in 2018. The Chapmans planted the vineyard and olive grove on land that was formerly a sheep paddock in 1999, and inside 25 years have twice won New Zealand’s ‘organic vineyard of the year’ award (two out of the past four years).

Albariño is becoming an important variety in New Zealand, as its thicker skins are better suited to the fierce UV of the sun than those of Sauvignon Blanc. We enjoy this example’s bright acidity, its generously waxy, barrel-enhanced texture and the stone fruit flavours of peach and apricot. Enjoy with oily fish, salty cheeses or with toasted cashews.
