About Barone Pizzini, Franciacorta Rosé 2019

One of life’s small shames – everyone knows Prosecco; no-one knows Franciacorta.

Since 1961, this appellation based around Lake Iseo in Lombardy, northern Italy has been producing high quality sparkling wines, using the Champagne method, and the Champagne grape varieties. Many critics and connoisseurs feel it beats Champagne for quality and price.

Part of the reason is that production of Franciacorta is relatively small, with vineyard area a tenth of the size of the Champagne region, and annual output being 21 million bottles, compared to 300 million in Champagne. Mathematicians amongst you will have deduced that permitted yields are lower in Franciacorta; minimum ageing requirements are also longer, and these factors contribute to high quality wine.

Tom visited Barone Pizzini when on holiday in Italy in 2017. Already under the spell of the beautiful area (lake Iseo is a near neighbour of Lake Garda, but quieter, and more antiquated; the waters of the lake are azure blue, and local fishermen supply the sleepy restaurants with seafood from the Lake), he was in seventh heaven at the tasting table.

So we’re delighted to have added this bottled sunshine to our list. The 2019 Rosé is 80% Pinot Nero, and 20% Chardonnay. 30 months ageing on the lees adds depth of flavour, notes of biscuit and hazelnut, to the upfront raspberry and blueberry fruit character.

Franciacorta is a great food wine too – the high acidity makes it a great companion for umami rich foods – sun-dried tomatoes, cured meats or Parmesan cheese.
