Each year, Brett raids the same mixed-planted block of his vineyard for Barossa’s big three red varieties – Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro.
He co-ferments them so the wine is blended in the vineyard rather than in the cellar. And this splendidly-balanced thing results, with dark, soft and juicy fruit, some floral depth, barrel spice and herbal notes. This is drinking well now, but has good ageing potential.
Hayes Family Wines are a small independent producer in Barossa Valley, Australia, a region home to some of the oldest vines in the world, many of which are still planted on their own rootstocks, something rarely seen in Europe post-Phylloxera. Hayes’ estate is one of few to be certified organic in the region.
Hayes Family Wines are exclusive to Substrata in the UK.
