About Quinta do Montalto, Ânfora De Baco, Branco, 2022
An Amphora fermented white, made from Fernão Pires grapes. The inside of the amphora is coated in a natural pine tree resin, according to the ancient process used 2000 years ago by the Romans.
Bold flavours here – preserved lemon, lime, fresh green apple. There is a memorably rich and waxy texture – it’s a touch reminiscent of a Chenin Blanc.
Montalto are a mixed organic farm about an hour’s drive from Lisbon; they make an impressive array of wines from indigenous Portuguese varieties, and over the past few years have taken on several local abandoned vineyards, and nursed old vines back into production.
